Well, I have a week to go before my exam. Let's do this.
Yesterday morning I woke up around 9:30 or so. I would have preferred sleeping longer after such a late night... but oh well. I made some eggs for breakfast. Mom and dad use fresh chicken eggs. They are far superior to store eggs, and much larger.
After breakfast...I think I studied. I know I studied most of the afternoon, but I can't really recall what I did right after breakfast. Hm. I talked with Amber for a while...........huh. Yup, I did something. Anyhow, at some point in the afternoon I started studying. Study for an hour, break for 30 minutes, study for an hour, break for 30 minutes.
Mom made pizza for dinner! Then she and dad went to a soccer game. It was raining... so I did not join them. I cleaned up dinner and studied for a little bit more. Later on I went over to Becky's to help her dig a hole. She wanted to make a place to keep her firewood that wouldn't get wet from dew, so we dug a shallow hole and put rocks in it. And broke sticks for the fire.
After hole-digging and stick-breaking we decided to make cupcakes. So we went to the store, picked up Miles from work, then got food! We made cupcakes when we got back, ate food, listened to trance music, and talked about things. Miles wanted to know about the exam process works, specifically what happens when you take all the exams and things like that and what sort of letters I'll have. He wanted to contrast it with what he will be doing, since he's planning on earning his PhD in Philosophy. We both have a lot of work ahead of us....
Yeah, that about sums things up. The end!

Day 346
Well yesterday was quite the day.
I tried to sleep in, but my body still decided to wake me up at 6:30. Yay. So I got up and finished packing. It's probably good that I woke up so early because I finished packing just in time to get to Erica's at 8:45. A group of six other people in my program and I decided to go watch the Cincinnati Reds play yesterday! So we left Muncie a little after 9 and drove down to Cincinnati. Dustin rode with me. We talked about a lot of different things. It was fun.
So let's see... we got to the game a little bit late, but still during the first inning (I believe). Yeah. It was a baseball game. Sort of fun, but I mostly went to be with my friends. None of the cameras ever put us on the big screen... which was quite silly. In between the third and fourth inning they had the "smile cam," and we all smiled really big! But the camera didn't pan over to us. Dumb. But the game was good. Dustin and I got Skyline Chili coney dogs. I'm still not quite sure why people love Skyline Chili so much. It's fine, but certainly nothing special. I mean... they put cinnamon in their chili. Which is tasty and a little different, but definitely not worth the hype that Cincinnati people give it.
Anyhow, I left after the eighth inning. I didn't want to go. I really hate leaving friends. Bleh.
So the ride back was ok. Usually when I get kinda down I can listen to music with a very heavy bass line... and it somehow makes me feel better. I think hearing and feeling the rhythm just relaxes me. I listened to this song a few times. I also stopped to get a caffeinated beverage....which turned into two because there was a really good sale. I was only going to have one, but I was still a little drowsy so I had the second one. Always a bad idea. I made it home safely, but about 10 minutes after I got home I started to crash... except that I still had the caffeine in me. So I started moving things in from my car and promptly wore off the rest of the caffeine. Which made me realize how hungry I was. And tired. And gross from being in the sun/sweating all day. So food came first, then shower. Then just sitting and not moving.
Mom and dad came back shortly after I got out of the shower, so I talked with them for a while... getting them up to date on all of my goings on and what will be happening over the next week.
Becky and Miles and I went to the opening showing of the Avengers last night, so I went over to Becky's, then we drove up to Bowling Green. Miles was silly and he thought he bought tickets for 3D.... but he accidentally bought them for 2D. And I bought mine for 3D. So I had to be really sneaky about getting into the theater with Becky and Miles. But I made it and the movie was seen. And oh... what a movie it was. After it was over we went back to Miles apartment and discussed it in great detail with some of his apartment mates. Then it was waaaaaaaaaay past my bed time, so we came home and I went to bed. I think I finally got in bed around 4:45. I was so tired.
Yup. The end!

Day 345
Short update because I'm tired and my laptop is being slow... I haven't used it in forever so all of the things want to update.
This morning I got up and everything. I went to the computer lab to do some studying before my final. Nothing too exciting happened... just studying. Timbo came in a little before I left for the exam and we talked some about the life con final yesterday.
I thought that the final went fairly well. I skipped 5 questions on the first run through (out of 25 questions), then was able to answer 4 of them. I tried one particular one about 5 different ways... the half page I had was filled with drawings of support sets and integrals... but none of them yielded any of the answers that were provided in the multiple choices. So I just picked one that had the same denominator (12). I finished the exam with about 20 or 30 minutes left, so I went to my office, ate lunch, and just relaxed for a little bit... letting my brain calm down. I wasn't productive in the computer lab either, but I really just needed a lot of time for my brain to recoup. I basically just did an entire actuarial exam (minus 5 questions) in half of the allotted time for the exam. So my brain needed some time to just chill.
When I returned to my apartment I packed for a while. I'm finally all packed (I think)! I took a break mid-afternoon to play a game with Jared. Then I packed up my computer, which will remain packed up until after I take the exam. So the rest of the afternoon I just worked on packing and doing dishes. Jessie and Richard stopped by to drop off some things for mom and I gave them all of my food that was going to go bad. Much better than just throwing it out.
After they left I went to campus to drop off some books I'd borrowed at the beginning of the semester on probability. I never used them... but I felt like such a good student! When I got back I did some more cleaning.
Later on Kathryn and I went to Berry Winkle to get ice cream. I got lemon something and mango sorbet. With raspberry topping. It was really good. Then we went back to my apartment and watched some TV, with various bits of conversation. We talked about how we don't really feel like grown ups, how hard it is for us to transition and find closure... and how much we like ice cream. So it was a good time.
Now I'm going to bed. I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow... good night!

Day 344
One final down, one to go.
This morning started pretty normally. I made a salad for lunch, but I didn't have any eggs or chicken to put on it... so I just used leftover stir-fry (minus the rice). It was ok.
This morning in the computer lab I studied with Timbo and Matt. Mostly going over equations and explaining some of the questions from past quizzes to Matt. Yeah, we studied for a couple hours then went to go take it.
The test went ok. There were two questions that I didn't know how to do, but I gave them my best shot. One of the questions was poorly worded, so I gave it my best shot. I didn't want to go up and ask him because one student had already been up a few times and Dr. Foley was starting to get annoyed. I did go up on another question, but only because the question literally did not even ask a question. So I gave it my best shot. We'll see how it goes! I finished in about an hour and just couldn't work the other problems any differently... so I put an answer and was done.
I went up to the computer lab after the test and just let my brain relax for a while. I also got signatures from the necessary people for my grading and lab hours. Then I had lunch and went back to the computer lab. I did some studying, then discussed probability with David. We talked about some of the fundamental problems with actuarial science, whose problems actually lie in the problems of statistics: how do you make your model fit the data? For instance, in my field of study we constantly deal with the probabilities of surviving or dying over a specific time period. These are measured by insurance companies at the end of every year. But often we need to interpolate what happens and figure out what happens during the year. So we make theorems and symbols and theoretical measurements... measurements that make our theories work perfectly. But there is no such thing as a hazard rate (probability that something will break/die at a particular instance), but we use them constantly in our calculations. So sometimes we have weird tautologies that are actually counter-productive. Sometimes we have these circularly reasoned theorems... "We need A to go to C, but we don't know how it happens. So let's make B such that A goes to B and B goes to C. Now A goes to C!" I don't want to make it sound like the math isn't valid. These are common procedures in modeling. The rules of math are bound by the syntax of logic and cannot be wrong. The trouble is figuring out how the real data fits in our mathematical models. If we could measure probabilities on every person at every single point in time, then we could create these (currently) fictional instantaneous probabilities. But until that happens (not in my lifetime, anyhow), then we rely on theory. And so far theory has not led us astray, provided we follow it.
Oh, and it rained today.
Anyhow. When I came home I did some packing, dish washing, then did a little probability. Packing was hard because most of the stuff I need I still use regularly. So I'm guessing most of my packing will be tomorrow after I get off work.
So yeah. I wasn't feeling to great so I didn't do much after dinner. I'm just going to studying for a couple hours tomorrow in the computer lab, then go for it. It's bed time now. So good night everyone.

Day 343
Good evening.
Well, today started finals week. I didn't have any finals today, so I woke up around 8:30, got breakfast, showered, then just worked on some probability for a while. I also did some packing. Today's goal was to get clothes packed, which I did so successfully. And I made brownies this morning!
There was a luncheon for the math department. I saw with Jacob, Erica, Kathryn, Timbo, Alex, and Mr. Dean. It takes most of us a while to get into a good conversation... so we just sat in silence for a while. After we got our food we talked some about how awesome Muncie is (ha), the surprising diversity in Richmond, Indiana (Mr. Dean has a sister who used to live there and some of us have friends who live there), and (of course) exams. Alex recently took MFE (Modeling Financial Economics) and was telling us how disheartening it is to think that you'll get a result back when the test is over... and then you don't. He even called SOA (Society Of Actuaries, one of the governing bodies who administer the exams) to ask if there had been an error. The assured him that it was not an error, but that since this is one of the first times MFE has been given computer-based instead of pencil-and-paper, that they had not yet included the unofficial pass/fail that some of the other exams have. So.. hopefully they have that when I take MFE, which will hopefully be in the next year or so.
Here's a picture we got with two of our professors.
Also, all of the graduate assistants were recognized for being helpful. We got a little packet that had some formal letter from the school that basically said "thanks for being a GA," a certificate that states that we are outstanding GAs, and...this weird USB bracelet thing.
Go go gadget INTERNET-
Yeah... they're interesting.
When I got back... I had to study. Gross. Well, I studied after I read this awesome article about how linguists have studied speed daters to determine how their language patters can predict the likelihood of finding a partner. It got into other things... it's a good read if you're interested.
Then I studied. I studied for life contingencies for a while, then started making dinner. Today was sloppy Joe's. I also called mom and we talked about my coming home plans, upcoming events, and things of that nature. So on Thursday I'm going to a baseball game with some people in my program down in Cincinnati (totally thought it was Fort Wayne until today), then heading up to Findlay! That means I need to be all packed by Wednesday night. Got it. I'll be leaving most of the things I don't need at home here in Muncie... may as well make use of my $400 a month third floor storage unit!
Ok, one more awesome link that I just found: the largest photo in existence (272 gigapixel). You can use your scroll wheel or the on-screen + or - buttons to scroll in an out. And you can scroll in really really far.
Yeah. I made sloppy Joe's for dinner. And oven fries. Kathryn came over to partake in the eating of that with me. We talked about our upcoming finals, the exam, plans for the summer. Apparently this summer she will be going to her first two weddings. But her first wedding will be on the Florida beaches... so I don't know whether mine can top that. I guess we'll see. We also talked about fighting and arguing and how we do those. When I get in fights or arguments, I generally try to find the source of conflict and suggest a logical settlement. To some this is welcome, but to most it simply makes them more upset because fights tend to be a more emotional battlefield. Kathryn on the other hand just wants everyone to be happy, even if her view isn't being fairly represented. I want everyone to be happy, but clearly everyone would be happier if they just saw things my way! That's how it works, right? :)
After dinner Kathryn went back to her apartment and I studied for probability. I did that for about an hour, but then I just started making dumb mistakes and deduced that my brain was just too tired to be effective. So I stopped. And now I'm going to bed. Good night everyone. Thanks for reading this nonsense every day... or however often you read it.

Day 342
I decided to take advantage of not having class in the morning and stay up a little bit. Yup.
This morning was just more of the same thing. Eating, showering, studying. I tried honey and brown sugar on my oatmeal this morning. I don't know if the two flavors added to each other or just tasted the same. But I liked it.
Jessie and Richard came to get me for church. Pastor Mark talked about how important it is to completely devote yourself to God. He talks about that a lot, but it's good. It's a pretty important topic so I like that he talks about it so much.
After church we went to Fazoli's for lunch. It was really crowded. Over lunch we discussed the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator test and our indicated personality types. I took one at Mount Vernon and was classified as an ISTJ: Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Judgment. Wikipedia has a very good article on it, and for 95% of it I felt like it was written specifically for me. It was weird.
When we got back I wasn't quite ready to study, so I played a game with Miles for a few minutes. I didn't feel bad because I knew I'd be studying the rest of the day. And that's pretty much what happened. I studied for about 7 hours today... it was a lot of fun!
I did probability for a few hours, then after dinner Dustin and Timbo came over and we studied for our life con test. I started off just writing down formulas, then I began working through the practice final. Tomorrow I'm going to work through past quizzes and tests and look at the formulae again.
Here's my picture for the day. I thought it looked kind of neat.
And I'm going to go to bed now. Good night everyone!

Day 341
Hey everyone.
I'm listening to Drifting by Enya right now. It's a really wonderful song. I've been listening to a lot of Enya recently. It's so.. mellow. I like it a lot. It usually puts me in a very contemplative mood. Sometimes a little melancholy, but generally contemplative.
I got about 9 hours of sleep last night. It felt really good. I made eggs for breakfast. I'm sure I've talked about it before, but I learned while at Mount Vernon that the key to making a good omelette is to use lots of cooking spray.
I found that if I didn't use enough spray, my eggs would just stick to the pan and not be good omelettes. I used cayenne pepper and cinnamon in my eggs. This is seriously one of my favorite spice combinations. Use just enough cayenne so that you feel it, but don't necessarily taste it. After you get the feel of cayenne, the cinnamon hits your taste buds. And I love the taste of cinnamon. The cayenne then makes your mouth lust for more while the cinnamon then gives you a wallop of awesome... right in the tongue. And I simply love eggs. Last week I ate 2 dozen eggs between breakfast, stir-fry, my salads, and meatloaf.
While I'm discussing my love for Enya music, allow me to share my two favorites (I think): A Day Without Rain and The Memory of Trees.
After breakfast I finished my laundry. It appears that I neglected to move it yesterday... so it was waiting for me in the washing machine. I'm glad that it didn't run away from me. That would have been sad. Then I went grocery shopping.
I wasn't going to take this... but it seemed kind of cool so I decided to pretend to be artsy.
Grocery shopping went fast. I didn't need too many groceries since I'm mainly just finishing up the food that I have. For lunch I had a can of soup that I have literally had since January. And about an entire sleeve of crackers. I started working through problems over lunch, then continued to do so. For the majority of the afternoon I alternated between studying and doing dishes. I took a break for about an hour in the middle of the afternoon, then went back at it.
I had a really good thought this afternoon. But I forgot to write it down (I just figured I'd remember since it was so good)... but it appears that I have forgotten it. Shoot.
I went to First Wok with Jessie and Richard for dinner. I really like it. It's a standard quick Chinese restaurant: one dining room with about 20 tables, 1 to 3 kids doing homework in the dining area, a 7 year old kid taking orders (or answering the phone), the one token American guy with an otherwise Asian (sometimes Mexican) work force, and the counter after the far end of the dining room with the kitchen directly behind it. It is also named something that is a combination of two or three things from the following list: New, China, Dragon, Wok, Great, Wall, Hunan, Mandarin, Garden(s), Kitchen, First, River... In fact, there are number of Random Chinese Restaurant Name Generators on the Internet. Here is one that is most visually appealing. Press F5 (refresh) to view a new name. Anyhow, I really enjoy places like that.
After dinner I studied some more and did some more dishes. Around 9:30 I decided that I was done.... I'd studied enough for today. I did around 40 problems. My goal is at least 30 a day.
I'm pretty tired, so I'm going to go to bed now. Have a good night, everyone.
