Day 291

Well, today was pretty good.  I liked it, anyhow.

I woke up around 9:45.  I've been really surprised with how late I've been sleeping in.  After I got up I got some breakfast then played Assassin's Creed for a while.  When I was done I took a shower and got some lunch.

I believe it is important to note that on this day, no shirt was worn.  That's right folks.  Even though this blog is called "I'm wearing a shirt," I rebelled against the rules and wore no shirt.

Mostly because I need to do laundry.

So after all of that, I did some finance stuff.  As is my Friday afternoon custom. I started using a program called... "You Need A Budget."  It's not very different from the Excel sheet that I've been using for the past few years, but we'll see.  It comes with a 34 day free trial, so I'll play around with it and see how I like it.  When Kimmy comes to visit, I'll see if she likes it.  So if you have any suggestions for something aside from Excel, feel free to let me know.  Thanks!

After that I added another recipe to my recipe blog.  And made some changes to the both sites.  I don't think it was anything huge.  Let me know if I should change something.

I did some more thought-processing for my life con assignment.  Mainly just gathering ideas and formulae together. I'm getting together with Timbo and Dustin tomorrow to work on it.  Oh what fun that will be.

For dinner I made some fish and asparagus that Clifton left for  me, since he went home and didn't want it to go bad.  I don't even feel like what I did was cooking... I put them in their respective skillets, added some oil and spices, and turned the heat on.  But whatever you call that, dinner was made.  The asparagus wasn't too bad.  I don't remember liking it, but I'd definitely try it again.  I just have no idea what to do with it.  I just put some garlic salt on it, which is my go-to spice.  Love that stuff.

After dinner... I don't remember doing anything super productive.  I probably didn't.  I think that one of the most valuable things I've learned during grad school is that when I need to work, I do it without any distractions.  And when I need to relax, I do that without any distractions.  I guess I've learned to be intentional in most things.  That way I don't fall into my classic study habit of having my text book open... and not really studying.  I think that's the worst because I'm not getting studying done, but I'm also not really enjoying the fact that I'm not studying because I feel like I should be doing work (which I should be).  So instead, when I take a break, no thought of school enters my mind.  And when I work (hopefully) I don't think of anything but work.  When my mind starts to wander too much, I take a break.  Otherwise I'm just wasting time.  That's helped me be more efficient and just get more stuff done.

In other news, I think that after I'm done with my pills I'm going to go see a dermatologist.  Nearly 3 weeks in and my rash has only gotten a little bit better.  According to everything I've read, it could have cleared up in a couple of days.  Now, that certainly doesn't have to be the case... but almost 3 weeks with little clearing?  I just don't feel like it will be all cleared up in the next week.  But we'll see.

Ok.  Time for bed.  Night!

Day 290

I had big hopes for today.  I guess there's always tomorrow.

My morning was fairly productive.  After I ate and showered I went to the Verizon store to have them look at my phone.  I've been having trouble with the charger staying in, so I decided that I would finally take it in.  The guy was very helpful and after he was able to get a hold of the right number they sent my phone, which should get here on Monday.  He was very apologetic for (of?) how long it took.  He tried calling 3 different support numbers, but they all claimed to not be the right person to call.  But he kept trying and eventually talked with someone who would help out.  So that should be here on Monday.

When I got back I had the rest of my chicken and pasta for lunch.  This afternoon I played Assassin's Creed for a while, added a new recipe to my recipe blog, and did some dishes.  While I made dinner, I learned a valuable lesson: don't try to bake biscuits in microwave.  I had my dinner in the oven and it used 8 of my 10 biscuits.  So I thought I would experiment and see what happened when I tried to bake the remaining 2 in the microwave.  I'll tell you what happened.  They burned.
So I spent the next bit of time opening the windows, turning on fans..... fun stuff like that.  But the smoke detector didn't go off, so it was a victory.

After dinner I continued to be super productive.  And by that I mean.... I put dishes in the dish washer.  It's very frustrating to open the dish washer and have no idea whether something is clean or dirty.  It's very common to put something through the dish washer and have it come out greasy.  So I don't know if I ran it and some of the things did get washed, or I just didn't run it.  I'm excited to live somewhere with a working dish washer.  I might have maintenance come look at it, but the other people I've talked to who live in Windermere say that their dishwashers are about as useless.  So I'm assuming it's just another case of the managers taking advantage of college students who usually don't know any better.

Anyhow.  Not  much else happened the rest of the evening.  I was going to do laundry, but I'm out of dryer sheets.  Bleh.  So... I'm not sure if I'm going to just do without or try to survive until Saturday when I go shopping.  We'll see!

Ok.  Time for bed.  Have a good night/day or such.  I'm guessing that most people will read this after they wake up... not before they go to bed.  Oh well.  Good night.

Day 289

Wow, I really lost track of time.  It's late.. and I'm tired.

Ok.  So.  I actually slept in this morning.  I didn't get up until 9:30!  It was crazy.  I wasn't really hungry when I got up, so I didn't eat breakfast. Oh well.

After checking my email/Facebook/Reddit, I took a shower and planned my day...which didn't take too long.  I decided to go out to the Verizon store to have them look at my phone, then take a short grocery shopping trip so that I have food to eat until Saturday.

So I went to Verizon.  It wasn't busy, so one of the guys working there was able to  help me right away.  I explained that my phone charger is not staying in, either with the charger that came with my phone or with my older charger.  Unfortunately, I didn't have the necessary account information, so there wasn't really anything he could do for me.  I'm guessing that it's because I hadn't gotten my phone from that store.  It wasn't really a big deal, so I'll probably go back tomorrow.  Afterwards I went to Aldi to get some food.  I've started to relax a little bit about getting snacks.  I used to be very strict on myself to not get snacks because they're frivolous and not necessary.  Then I realized that an extra $3 every couple of weeks isn't going to kill me.  So I got some chips and salsa.  I'm going to try a new recipe this week (not using chips and salsa), so I had to get some ground turkey and cheese.  What else did I get... Oh yeah.  Tomato sauce.  I'm probably going to make that tomorrow.

So when I got home I put groceries away.  I played Team Fortress for a bit, then I played "Kinect Adventures" on Kimmy's Xbox.  It was pretty fun.  It's a very active game and after about 30 minutes I was starting to sweat.  But it's a fun game.

I decided to be productive, so I cleaned my room.  Then I started looking at the project that's due on Tuesday.  Boy, it's going to be so much fun!  If I can figure out what's going on (and I think I'm close), it shouldn't be too bad.  I hope.  So I went through the 5 or so different emails he sent us and the related documents and tried to fit pieces together.  I also made a new Gmail filter for all emails sent by my professors.  I felt like that was a smart idea.

For dinner I just made some chicken and noodles.  Probably about a month ago Aldi had a "special buy" of Asian noodles.  So got a couple bags because they were all of 70 cents.  So I made one of them tonight with some chicken.  It was pretty good.  I didn't think of it at the time, but I should have cooked the chicken in teriyaki sauce instead of just putting some sauce on my chicken.  Oh well.  It was still good.

After dinner I began a new project: a recipe blog!  You might have noticed the new addition to my blog page.  Up above should be a bar with "Home" and "My Recipes."  If you click on the "My Recipes" button, you will be taken to a new page.  That was my project this evening.  Let me know what you think of it!  I'm probably going to tweak it some more tomorrow.  I have no idea how often I'm going to update it once school starts, but hopefully I can get most of the recipes that I make included tomorrow.  I'll be sure to indicate on here when I've updated it.

So I worked on that for most of the evening.  Then I played some more video games, browsed more internet... and now it's bed time.

3.06.2012

Day 288

Ok.

So, I woke up today around 8:30.  I slept in Timbo's room last night and Dustin slept in the guest room.  All of my stuff was in the guest room, so when I went in there I was surprised to see that Dustin was awake.  Apparently he came down with some sort of bug over the night and was feeling pretty miserable.  So I ran down to the store and got him some Sprite.  Then I went down to where Timbo was watching some TV, got some cereal, and joined him.  We were watching a show called "Cash Cab," where people take a taxi that just happens to be hosting a game show.  What happens is the taxi driver asks the people questions as he takes them to their destination, earning money as they get questions correct.  If you miss three questions, you have to walk the rest of the way.  But if you answer correctly, you get to keep whatever money you won (usually a few hundred dollars).  It was pretty interesting.  Between Dustin, Timbo, and myself we actually knew most of the answers.  It was pretty entertaining.

Then I took a shower.  I felt much better afterwards.

When I got back, there was a special on the history channel about "surviving the apocalypse" or something.  It was really good.  It was basically a show about what would happen if some disease killed most of the population.  Knowing my love of zombie-lore, Dustin and Timbo both figured I'd like it.  Which I did.  They definitely brought in some points I had never considered.  Like the fact that if the infection is passed through fluid exchange, you could touch the skin of someone with the disease (or a dead person) without getting sick.  Anyhow, the show was really cool because the interviewed a lot of experts in different areas (sociology professors, city officials, camping/outdoor survival instructors, etc) to explain what would happen from their perspective.  It was pretty cool.

After that, we watched part of another special on what would happen if an asteroid hit the earth.  We got into a discussion about the earth how old it is and everything.  Dustin made a comment about how he doesn't understand why people would believe that the earth is only a few thousand years old simply because a book says so, when science indicates that it is much older.  So I explained two things.  1: if you believe that there is a God, then it's not a huge step to imagine that he could create the earth whenever he wanted to in whatever form was convenient.  2: No one can prove anything about ancient history.  We can speculate until we're blue in the face, but we can't prove anything.  Scientific evidence can suggest a certain idea, but there is no way to know what actually happened... say 7000 years ago. We might have some very educated guesses, but that's all.  And related to that is confirmation bias.  If you believe that the earth is millions of years old, then any evidence you see will confirm this idea (an asteroid collision would fit well with visible craters and the extinction of animals.  But if you believe that the earth is younger and/or that the biblical account is (reasonably) accurate and that there was a large flood* then you are more inclined to see evidence in that light.

*So I just had a thought.  In many cultures there are stories of large flood that ravaged civilization.  In the thing I watched earlier today, they made it very clear that if an asteroid or some celestial body hit the ocean, it would send water into the sky that would eventually fall down like rain and there would be massive tsunamis.  What if these are the same?  I have done exactly 0 research on the topic (about the same amount of research that I feel supporters of Pangea have done... but that's another story), but what if there was a literal asteroid storm that just decimated the earth for 40 days and 40 nights?  Just a thought.

Eventually when Dustin was feeling a little better we came back to Muncie.  When I got back to my apartment I unpacked, then made some dinner.  Tonight was leftovers and sauteed "I have old vegetables!"  They were both edible.  Then I just... relaxed.  It was nice.

Clifton got back early evening, so we talked for a bit, then he had a friend over.  And now... I'm tired.  So I'm going to bed.  Night!

3.05.2012

Day 287

I woke up this morning around 830. I kind of slept in! It was nice. I got some breakfast, then showered and played games in my phone for a while. Then Dustin got up, we talked for a bit, then we started to get our stuff packed up.
Amber got home around 1230, so we talked with her for a minute, then headed out. We had quite the drive ahead of us.
It was mainly uneventful. Lots of snow at first, but not too bad.  We stopped to get gas and food, but otherwise it was pretty uneventful.
We got to Timbo's house around 540. We sat around and talked for a little bit, then got ready to get sushi! I met his parents, then we talked with his dad for a bit.  He wanted to know where Dustin and I were from and such.  I like him. So we told more about our background and the program.
Timbo lives about 20 minutes south of Cincinnati, so we went up there to get some sushi.  And now we're just hanging out up here, probably going home in the near future. Yup! So.. Almost good night!

3.04.2012

Day 286

Not too much to report today.  I woke up around 8:30 and Zeke was quite excited to see me.  So I let him outside.  Then Lily started to wake up and cry a little bit.  I didn't know where anyone else was, so I went in to get her up.  Amber's mom ears heard the sound, but I got to Lily's room just as Amber was getting there.  But she let me feel all special and get Lily out of her crib.  Then we got breakfast.  It's really fascinating to watch Lily get older.  At this point her main words are "yeah" and "no," with "ball" thrown in the mix every so often.

After breakfast we made some coffee, Jesse woke up, then we just sat around and talked for a bit.  Dustin got up shortly thereafter and joined the excitement.  Also, it snowed.

Ho hum.  I showered.  Then we played some games.  We tried a game called Agricola again today... but Dustin and I were getting pretty frustrated.  Mainly because we didn't read the rules for ourselves.  And there were a lot (like way a lot) of many tiny rules.  We had all of the main ideas down, but there were so many details that I just couldn't keep straight.  So I would just need to read all of the rules before next time.

Umm... after that Dustin took a nap, Jesse went to go do something, and Amber and I just kind of sat around.  Talked for a bit.  Sat some more.  It was nice to relax.  Eventually we went down to the store.  They really aren't as in the middle of nowhere as I thought, but when you come here at night it certainly seems like it is.  At night it doesn't seem like there's much of a difference between the main highway and the little dirt road they live on.  Just kidding, it actually is a real road.  Anyhow, we went to the store and were successful!

When we got back Amber started making dinner.  I pretended to be productive and I helped her peel carrots.  She made a roast type of thing that was pretty good.  I'll have to try it some time.  I've realized that the main difference between her cooking and my cooking is that she has found ways to use her oven more, where I use my stove more.  And with the oven, you don't have to be nearly as attentive.  I should take note of this.

Then we sat around and talked for a bit while Amber put Lily to bed.  Both Dustin's and Jesse's dad worked as firefighters, so they talked about that for a while.  Apparently Dustin's dad used to work as a Hot Shot, sort of the first response team for big fires.  So that's pretty cool.

After dinner we played a game of Settlers.  Dustin had never played before, but he did just as well as the rest of us.  I think we all had between 8 and 10 points.  So definitely it was a good game.

Umm.. and now we're getting close to bed time.  Travel plans have changed a bit and Dustin and I are heading out tomorrow.  We're heading to go see Timbo tomorrow and he had some stuff come up on Tuesday, so tomorrow will work better for him.  Which is fine.  Dustin and I don't really have a tight schedule anyhow, so we're pretty flexible.

So yeah.  Going to bed time.  Night!

3.03.2012

Day 285

What a day!  Allow me to recap a bit.

I woke up this morning at a wonderful 7:45.  Because, you know, sleeping in is for sillies.  Then Amber made pancakes and we just sat and talked for a while.  I showered.  Then eventually Jesse got up.  And a bit after that Dustin got up.  By about... a little before 10 we were all alive or such.  Amber gave me a tour of the rest of the house.  I really like it.  Their basement is going to be really cool after they get it finished.  But before that the water people (I clearly know what I'm talking about) have to come make sure that the basement doesn't get flooded anymore.  But that's way expensive, so all of this will be happening over a number of years.

I also learned that Amber's hospital bill (not what they paid out of pocket) was around $28,000 for Lily to be born.  Nonsense, right?

Anyhow.  We had lunch meat and cheese for lunch.  Dustin and I played Carcossone, which he'd never played before.  It was a really close game and he beat me by about 4 points.  Then after that Amber put Lily down for a nap and the three of us played Agricola.  Well.  We tried to play.  The rules were intimidating and Amber thought she remembered most of them.  And she remembered most of them.  There were just some important details that were left out.  But in her self-defense, she has only played maybe once.  So it was understandable that she didn't really know what was going on.

After that... Jesse got back from his errands that he was running.  Dustin took a nap.  We sat around and talked for a while.

Then Jesse and I went to go shoot clay pigeons.  I was really bad at it, but it was fun.  I think I hit 2 or 3 targets of the 20 or so that I tried.  Go me!  Jesse is much better at it.

Amber made chili and cornbread for dinner.  It was full of the tastiess.  She's making me a recipe book, so I think that's in there.  And then after dinner we played another game (with more correct rules) with Jesse.  I don't think I like that game too much because it's a bit too fast paced.  Everything changes just before you get comfortable.... but they like it.  That's what matters.  Then we played a few games of Dominion.  Keep in mind that Dustin had not played any of these games before, so he was a trooper.

I'm really tired so I'm gonna go to bed now. Night!

Day 284

Good morning!  I was too tired to update last night, but fear not!  My post has finally arrived.

Yesterday morning I got up a little early to finish packing and study for my test.  On the way to my test I realized that an equation I sort of derived on Thursday was incorrect, so I went about memorizing the proper one.  As it turns out, I was so focused on getting mentally prepared for the exam that I neglected to inform Dustin that this formula was incorrect.  So....yeah I felt bad.

I finished the test in about 15 minutes, which was about the time that the last person came into class.  That never made sense to me, but oh well.  I always try to get to tests early.  But I'm not them.  When I'd finished, I went to the computer lab to print off a map of my journeys today, since I never anticipate there being a consistent GPS signal.  Especially in West Virginia.  But apparently whenever you save a map in Google maps, it doesn't save directions? Only destinations? So that was incredibly useful.  Oh well.

In between classes we went to the Atrium and discussed the problems that had been on the exam.  I think I did well, but we'll see.

During life con we finished up talking about our project that's due after break. I think the current plan is to work on it next weekend, since Dustin and I will be back from out trips, and Timbo will be back from Cincinnati.

After life con I gave Kathryn a ride back to her apartment (since she watched the shuttle pull away just as we left the building), then just waited in her apartment as she and Dustin finished getting ready.  We went to go pick Dustin up, then off we went!  The plan was to take Kathryn to the airport, then Dustin and I would go to see Amber in West Virginia.

So we'd just left Dustin's apartment when it started to storm.  Like...rain so hard that it was difficult to see.  Yay.  We drove through that for about 15 minutes, then it lightened up a bit.  It rained moderately until we got to the outskirts of Indy.  Then it cleared up for a bit.  Our goal was to first get lunch at a restaurant I'd discovered called Shapiro's Deli.  It had really good reviews, so we gave it a try.  And it wasn't too terribly difficult to find.  It was pretty intimidating when we first walked in because it wasn't at all what I was expecting. Deli's I've gone to before we just little places with a counter where you ask for a sandwich.  No, this place was almost cafeteria style, but with just one serving table area.  So we got trays, decided to not get dessert (which they fiendishly placed right at where the trays are), and tried to figure out what was going on.  The display cases were full of desserts and salads and side dishes and behind the counter were people making sandwiches.  As I'm trying to look at the menu, this guy slicing meat say "Hello young man!  Would you like to try my Reuben today!?"  I thought about it for a couple seconds and said that I would.  I noticed a sign saying that the Reubens were $12, but I figured that was for something else.  It wasn't. But oh my goodness... it was totally worth it.  So completely worth it.  I highly recommend it.

Anyhow, after lunch we went to go search for a coffee place, since I was getting a bit drowsy from such a big lunch.  The first place we found was not longer in business.  But there was another one in the near vicinity.  It had a super scary bathroom though.  After we had gotten our drinks and such (Dustin got cheesecake on a stick).  We were just getting ready to leave when it started raining.  So Dustin and I were nice and went to go get the car, since we neglected to bring an umbrella.  After we picked Kathryn up it was off to the airport!

So we dropped her off, then it was off to Salem, WV!  The drive was pretty boring, aside from the fact that it rained nearly the entire time.  It got pretty bad at points, got better at others...and 6 hours later we were in Salem!

Just for the record (before Amber corrects anyone), they seriously live in the middle of nowhere.  Their house is really nice... but it's pretty far removed from anything.

Anyhow, we found it, talked for a little bit, then went to bed!  For it was a long day.  The end!

1.08.2012

Day 230

Last day of freedom.  Tomorrow starts school.  I really wish I could just be here with my friends and not take classes.  I'd even work!  Just no more studying or classes or anything like that.

I did my grocery shopping this morning.  I spent a bit more than I had anticipated, but I didn't think about the fact that there were a lot of things that I needed that I had used up at the beginning of break.  I have a pretty regular schedule of things that I buy weekly or bi-weekly, but it got thrown off by this whole break business.  Usually one week I end up spending more than the next, so it comes out on average to what I allot per paycheck.  So that's fine.

After grocery shopping I went to church with Jessie and Richard.  The pastor talked about putting God first.  It was really good.  Sometimes during a church service I like to think how someone who does not believe in God would take the message.  Sometimes I think that the person would dislike the message, but other times I think that (assuming the person was open minded) he or she would genuinely appreciate the message.  Today fell into the category of the latter.  He talked about how we spend so much time worrying about things that it gets in the way of us actually fixing the problem.  Even if someone doesn't believe in God and the concept of giving your problems to God, I think that everyone needs a reminder that worrying solves nothing.  Stop worrying and stressing out about things, especially when you can't fix those things.

I went to Jessie and Richard's for lunch.  They made french toast and bacon for lunch.  It was tasty.  We talked about classes and jobs and fun stuff like that.  I was telling them about my grades in the fall and how I did ok, but I thought I should have had higher grades.  It comes down to two things: 1-I got the short end of whatever grading scale was used and 2- I fall around the middle of the class, and I'm with a lot of people who are just smarter than I am.  And there's no way around either one of those, so I'm working on just accepting it and doing my best.  Like our pastor was saying in the service: worrying about it isn't doing anything for me, so let's move on!

Side note- Jeremy posted our picture website: click here!

This afternoon I was not terribly productive.  I did some dishes, cleaned my room some, then played video games.  I really just needed to relax on my last day before school started.  So relax I did.  I did have to run to Wal-mart to get a binder and paper.  It was pretty crazy.  Lots of students getting their supplies before classes start.  I ran into (figuratively) one of my students from the fall and (presumably) her mother.  We didn't stop to say hi, just waved and kept on going.

Let's see.  I got home, did some studying, ate dinner, hung out with Kathryn for a little bit.  We had a good discussion about what motivates people.  It started when we were talking about why boys do stupid things to get attention and why girls are attracted to boys who don't treat them well.  So I explained that at the core of every man is the need to be respected and that acceptance is intimately tied to respect.  Since men often do not get a satisfactory feeling of acceptance from their surroundings, it is standard to do stupid things to get attention.  It's not as satisfying as, say, the knowledge that you are truly important to someone.  But, as I explained, sometimes you don't have that knowledge and you take what you can get.  Getting attention helps many men feel important, even if it's only for a few brief seconds.  As far as her other questions, I explained that at the core of every woman is the need to feel loved.  In many verbally abusive relationships, the man makes the woman feel as though she can't be loved by anyone, save himself.  So even though he hurts her, the man will make the woman feel so inadequate that she wants some amount of affection, so she stays with the man.  It concluded with us talking about how complicated people are.  Personally... things are only complicated because people don't open up.  The world would be a different place if we didn't keep secrets...

Anyhow.  I'm tired and have to get up early for class in the morning.  So I'm going to bed.  Good night!

1.07.2012

Day 229

Another travel day today.  I left Mount Vernon a little later than I had anticipated, but it wasn't too bad.  I think around 9:30 or so.  I stopped to get gas and something to eat, so it was probably closer to 9:45 before I was actually leaving.  I arrived in Findlay, got my book, and was on the road again.  One of my text books arrived about two hours after I left for Mount Vernon on Wednesday, so I had to stop and get it.  It only added maybe half an hour onto my trip, so it wasn't too bad.

As I was driving to Muncie I had a realization.  I didn't get my oil changed all semester.  So I looked to see when I was supposed to do that and sure enough it was about 1500 miles ago.  Which could explain my horrible gas mileage.  So perhaps I'll do that tomorrow.  Or Monday after class.  Something.

I got to Muncie around 2.  Then I unpacked, had some lunch, and put stuff away.  I've come to realize that there is a very specific part of moving that irritates me so very much: doors.  I get so upset when my arms are full and I have to open a door.  See, not much makes me upset.  The way my mind works, everything plays out in my brain before the event occurs.  So when I drive, the entire route plays out (roughly) in my head before and during the trip.  I account for error and uncertainty to a degree that I can handle with relative ease.  And for the most part, every part of every day falls within this range of activities with which I can handle.  If I've planned everything out right in my head and I do everything properly, there will be minimal error and I will have a wonderful day.  But when small things for which I cannot or don't account happen... I get very upset.  Small things that you can't avoid, like tripping or dropping something when I hadn't anticipated it or can't catch myself (often times I have calculated in a degree of clumsiness).  For example, if I were going about my business and I was paying attention to my surroundings, I would have some degree of error pre-calculated and if I tripped I wouldn't be upset because it worked into a pre-considered possible outcome of my walking experience.  But if I'm not paying attention to my surroundings and I trip, I get very upset because I hadn't anticipated it happening.  Similarly: doors.  When I move things I like to carry as much as I can so that I don't waste trips.  But if I carry two arms full worth of things, I won't have a free hand to open and close the doors.  So either I waste arms space or I have to struggle to open/close the doors.  I do not like either outcome.  So I get very irritable when I have to open doors and my arms are full.  This is something that I've been trying to understand for quite some time, the reason for which these tiny things bother me so much.  I always account for a significant amount of error, but when that estimate isn't enough and some additional annoyance occurs.... bleh.  It really gets to me.

Anyhow.  Moving in was fantastic.  Clearly.  After everything was all put away, I just played video games for a while.  I'd had a long day.

A group of us were going out to dinner to bring in the new semester.  Since Erica and I live so close together we drove together.  So I went over to her apartment a little before we were supposed to meet everyone.  She brought her dog Howie back from home and he was very excited to not be in a car anymore.  He was all sorts of running everywhere.  So we went to dinner and met up with Tim, his wife Erin, a new actuarial science student named Paul, and Katheryn.  We went to a Mexican restaurant called Ciudad Colonial.  It was decent.  Puerto Vallarta is better, in my humble opinion.

After dinner I came back, relaxed, and now I'm going to go to bed!  I have to go grocery shopping in the morning, then study tomorrow afternoon!  Woohoo!  So...good night!

Day 228

I really need to get out of this thing where I don't write this at night.  There's no way I'll be able to do that once school starts.  Bleh.

Anyhow, yesterday was fairly eventful.  After breakfast I went to go talk with Dr. Whitaker and Dr. Noonan.  Noonan wasn't in his office yet, so Whitaker and I talked for a while.  He was giving me some advice on wedding registries.  I told him how it's really difficult because I don't like to have unnecessary things and he said that that's a great mindset to have anytime except when I'm registering for my wedding.  So he really recommended getting everything new, even if I currently own it.  Which is not how I work at all...We'll see how this goes.  Eventually Dr. Noonan came back and I talked with him as well.  I learned that apparently I'm "Uncle Joel" to his kids.  That was a surprise.

Then I came back and studied for a while.  I got a decent amount done.  Things have been going much slower since I'm reading the text book and the study guide, but we're getting there.  Around 3 Kimmy and I went to go find Jeremy and get our engagement pictures taken.  We got some pretty good ones.  Unfortunately engagement photos aren't really any of our thing, since they're way more posed than we like to do. But they're done and there were a handful that we all liked.

After pictures Kimmy and I got dinner in the caf.  Then she and I did some more work on our Macy's registry.  Around 7:45ish I went to go get ice cream with Lindsey and Courtney, some of my math friends.  It was fun.  When we got back Kimmy and I went to the PSU, talked with Joel Thomas for a bit, then finished up our Macy's registry (I think).  So sometime when Kimmy comes to visit we're going to work on our Wal-mart registry.  Woo-hoo!  And thus concludes yesterday.

Day 227

Yesterday was fun. It was a very long day, but it was fun. It started off like any good morning: a shower then breakfast. I was running late do I drove to breakfast, since the cafeteria stops serving breakfast at 9.  I had an omelet. And the lady used real eggs! It was really good.

After breakfast I went back to my apartment and studied for about an hour or so. Then I went to meet Kimmy at her apartment. When she was ready we left for Easton!

The main reason for our quest was to register at Macy's. We've decided to register at Macy's and Wal-mart. So we got to Macy's and started our adventure. And... Oh goodness. What an adventure. Once we figured out where to go we talked with the lady for probably.... 45 minutes setting up a Macy's account and taking care of all that nonsense. Then we finally got the little gun thing and went to town. Kimmy and I bad at this. In two hours we registered for 13 items. We have some work to do. But they didn't have a lot of the things we'd looked at online. And we were hungry.

So we went back to the car and aye lunch. Kimmy made sandwiches! They were really tasty. After lunch we considered going to a movie but nothing looked good. So we went coat shopping for Kimmy. She was looking for a black coat. And we found one. Then we went to Barnes and Noble. And Starbucks. While at Barnes and Noble, I learned that Snooki wrote a book. All by herself. So I decided to read this fine piece of literature. It was not anything of the sort. It was painful to read. I literally lost intelligence.  We didn't get very far.

Oh, and we ran into Joel Thomas. That was unexpected.

We were meeting Jared and Kanissa in Easton for dinner, so we just wasted time for a while. I took a nap in the car. Moved the car. Walked some more. Then eventually met with friends at Max and Erma! It was a lot of fun. We told them about registering. They enjoyed that. Then we just talked about all the things. As usual. Someday when we all have big people jobs we're all going to live next to each other. Along with Becky and Miles. It's going to be awesome.

After dinner we went to go see Sherlock Holmes. I had a free ticket! I went to go see Thor in Imax last May, but they projector wasn't working. So we got moved to another theater and got ticket vouchers. So yay! The movie was good the second time. Then.. It was late. So we all went home. Then I went to bed!

Day 226

Well, today started off oddly enough. I had a car appointment at 8. But I forgot to set an alarm last night, so mom has to wake me up. She woke me up around 730 (thanks mom!), made me a bagel and got me some milk while I showered, then I left for the dealership. I somehow managed to get there just after 8.

They were helpful and got it all fixed.  There was a guy there that was... Neat. He was a die-hard 'Merican. He comes in, and tells the people behind the counter that his has all the bumper stickers on it, one which reads "if you're going to burn our flag, make sure you wrap yourself in it first." Awesome. So he goes on talking while the rest of us ignore him. As I left the lady wished me well at college. The guy looks at me and says "you know what they say about college: it's all football and beer." So I replied "Well, when I was working on my bachelor's I spent most of my time studying. And now that I'm in grad school things haven't changed." He seemed all shocked and asked what I'm studying. Keep in mind that I'm walking to the door this entire time and the Kia staff is trying hard not to laugh. So i explained what I'm studying and he tried to pretend like he was familiar with it. Eventually I just said 'yeah, like that' to one of his comments and left. I had a dentist to visit.

So off I went to the dentist. It was standard. I think I fell asleep in the chair... Whoops!

When I got home I had some lunch, then did some packing. And studying. I was waiting to see if master book would come, but it didn't. So i just came to Mount Vernon!

When I got here I said hello to Adam and Tyler, then went off to see Kimmy! We ran some errands, then got food! When we got back we did registry stuff. We're going to go do our registering tomorrow. Our list seemed pretty short... Oh well!

Then I went back to hang out with Adam and Tyler. We read through the Bob Jones and Pennsicola student handbooks. It was entertaining. Then we just sat around and talked. It was good.

But I'm going to bed now. So good night!

Day 225

225 = 15 * 15.  Now that I have that little math fact out of the way, let us continue.

This morning I woke up, ate, showered, and started studying.  But apparently I was really tired because I then took a nap in dad's chair for about an hour.  I like naps.  Sometime while I was sleeping Kimmy came and sat in the other chair.  When I woke up I read a little bit more of chapter 2, then we got lunch.  I was a champ and ate some more of the manwich.

After lunch Kimmy and I did some work on our wedding registry.  It's pretty difficult because I already have many of the "starting out" type of things since I'm currently living on my own.  But I don't want to ask for kitchen things or household items if we don't have space or use for it at the moment.  And my brain doesn't work like this whole "get things for some time in the future."  My thinking is "I have everything I need right now.  And if I need a new something later... I'll get it then!"  So I'm trying hard to think of things that are functional now and will also be functional in the future.

Mom and Kimmy and I went to go visit the grandparents. We just sat around and talked for a while.  I was glad to see them again before going back to school.  When we got home Kimmy and I did some more registry things to finalize all the nonsense.  We're going to start our registry while I'm in Mount Vernon, I believe.

After dinner she and I started looking at honeymoon places.  Basically they're just expensive.  We're considering a cruise because it includes a place to stay, food, and entertainment.  And for some of them the cruise would be cheaper than just finding a place to stay, not including food and entertainment.  But we're still looking.  Feel free to share suggestions!

Then Kimmy had to leave.  I was sad.  Then I had to go study some more.  I really don't like studying.  The second book of my study guide is definitely going slower, which is frustrating.  It's a lot more reading, a lot less problem solving. Bleh.  But I'm getting there.  I didn't get as much done today as I had hoped... but oh well.  That's how it goes.

I'm going to bed now so that I can go get my car fixed in the morning.  So good night!

1.02.2012

Day 224

Break seems incredibly short.  Which is odd, because it's not so different from Christmas break at Mount Vernon: only a few days shorter.  But I just feel like I've hardly had any time off at all.  Oh well.

This morning I woke up and did my standard morning routine.  My blog took especially long to write, so that was a bit unexpected.  Around 11:30 Kimmy and I left to go meet Miles and Becky up in Bowling Green for lunch at Myle's Dairy Queen.  I had a hamburger and fries, both of which were very tasty.  After lunch we went to go watch the new Sherlock Holmes movie.  I need to do some math, but the $3 matinee is a tempting deal.  The only disadvantage is that it's a one hour round trip.  So it becomes a matter of analyzing the cost of gas and whether the additional cost in gas makes up for the extra $4.25 for a ticket in Findlay.  After a quick analysis, it is in fact cheaper to go to Bowling green if there are at least 2 people traveling in each car (as you end up spending about $5.90 in gas).  Anyhow, the movie was really good.

After the movie we went to Grounds for Thought (the local coffee shop).  Miles wanted to play chess, so he and I played a game even though neither one of us have really played in quite some time.  It was a pretty close game.  We both made some mistakes.  I ended up winning, but it was quite a battle.  I think that my only saving qualities were that a- I threw him off by making a few strategic random moves, b- I was able to hold on to my queen for longer, c-he protected his rooks a bit too much.  His aggressive king maneuver definitely did him well, however.  Overall it was a fun and good game.  I'm sure that Becky and Kimmy were just thrilled to watch us play.... They're good sports.

Then we came home.  Mom, dad, Kimmy and I all went out to Logan's for dinner.  It was tasty.  Mom and I both got fish and chips.  We talked about general education courses and why I don't like the art/music requirements (similar to how other students don't like the math requirements).  Apparently MVNU is redoing their curriculum, so those classes are no longer in existence.  Oh well!

When we got back Kimmy and I went to Wal-mart to do a little shopping.  We both got styptic pens (because they're awesome).  I used to have one, but I lost it.  And I think I'll probably end up cutting myself a little bit more with my new safety razor, so I decided to get something to fix it.  When we returned from shopping I studied for a while, since I hadn't done any yet today.  The second book I received has been a little bit frustrating.  The first book (on interest theory) summarized the three main text books on the topic of interest theory, so additionally reading wasn't especially necessary.  For the second book (on derivatives markets), there is only one references text book.  So this second study guide acts as a series of lecture notes and very closely sticks to the text...and it doesn't make a lot of sense without first reading the text book.  I think that my new course of action is to read a chapter from the derivatives markets text book, then the corresponding chapter in the study guide.  That will probably prove to yield the best result.  Either way, I'm hoping to have all of the main reading done either this week or early next week, then just start taking lots of practice exams.  What.  Fun. But for now it is bed time.  Night!

Day 223

Ok then.  Yesterday was new years.  Woo hoo.  I woke up fairly early after falling asleep on a couch at AJ's apartment around 12:30.  So I actually ended up getting around 7 or so hours of sleep.  AJ made us all breakfast burritos, then Miles and I cleaned up and headed back to Findlay.  It was pretty uneventful, except for the part where it was really windy.  Miles and I talked about all sorts of things on the way back.  For part of the time we talked about how a lot of people see new years as a time to reflect and restart, even though there isn't anything magical that happens.  I think that for most people it's a logical time to have closure, which I believe is important for many people.  Even if people don't explicitly think in terms of numbers and patterns, it integrates into their lives and unconsciously respond to cycles.

So to follow the trend and recap the important moments (that I remember) of my past year:

  • Last January I learned what it means to truly have too much time on your hands.  I hope to never be that bored again.  But I did learn how to play Axis and Allies and made some friends doing so.
  • For the last time I saw how dead Mount Vernon becomes when the power goes out.
  • I learned that many authority figures are just trying to follow the rules so that they don't get in trouble with their boss.  In trying to get my independent study cleared during very unlikely circumstances, I had 4 or 5 different people explain to me how to get it past the next person.  Even though I was a month late on my paperwork, was asking to take a directed study for a course which I could have taken in a normal classroom, and really didn't have a valid reason for having an independent study, I was able to convince all the right people why I should be allowed to do so.
  • This past spring I had the most difficult and time consuming classes of my undergraduate career: real analysis and senior colloquium.  Real analysis is a math class that deals with proving the fundamental laws of numbers, sets of numbers, and calculus.  In my senior colloquium I did a research paper concerning the moral obligation MVNU has to the people in the Beliezean education system regarding the recent installation of computers by MVNU faculty and students, including myself.  It turned into a 15 page paper with which I was very pleased.  I think it was one of my crowning moments of my time at Mount Vernon.
  • I got pretty close with Adam, since he and I volunteered at the homeless shelter together and worked out together.  And played a lot of video games together.
  • I have a new appreciation for Monday Night Raw.  Say what you will about how fake it is.  But I think that it has a very deep sociological message that often gets forgotten.  On the show, the fights are 85% staged.  There is also a mysterious General Manager that will make new rules or change things going on just to cause drama.  Someone might have won the match, but the General Manager can send a message saying "Nope.  He actually lost.  Surprise!"  All of this is done to make people upset and cause drama.  And this has the immediate effect of bringing people back week after week.  People are addicted to drama, especially when it doesn't involve them.  This made me think about media in general.  Think of a standard news source.  We often hear about the negative side of everything.  Terrorist attacks, hurricanes, death, disease, addiction, lies, and so on.  All of these things are negative.  But, much like in Monday Night Raw, it makes people keeping going back day after day.  People love watching celebrity drama for the same reason.  All of this results in higher viewer counts and higher profits for the network.  So the overall message that I learned is this: negative media means higher profits.
  • I got closer to people with whom I worked in Academic Support, like Maradith, Ricky, and Deborah.  I like them.
  • Kimmy and I went to Florida for a spring break mission trip.  It was really good.  I became pretty good friends with a guy who lived near me my freshman year and some other people I had never seen before.
  • Kimmy and I hung out!
  • My Senior Colloquium class was very enlightening.  Every Wednesday Joe Noonen had breakfast together and talked about different topics and ethically evaluated them.  Such as the implications of corporate-run prisons.  We would take some scenario and break it down into the most fundamental parts of what was going on, looking at everything in terms of personal relationships and interactions.  It was very good for considering just how complicated every single situation is so complicated.  It made me realize that since simple scenarios can actually be very complicated, we shouldn't take really complicated topics and automatically have a canned opinion of them.  It is of utmost importance to always have an open mind.
  • I graduated!
  • Over the summer I went to Montana with the family.  And driving out there is not fun.
  • I took an economics class.  It was ok.
  • I helped mama and poppy move to their new place.
  • I started blogging, which acts as an open journal.  Keeping a journal has been one of the best decisions I've made in my recent years.
  • I had a fantastic summer of hanging out with Becky and Miles.
  • This fall was a very big learning experience for me.  I finally learned what an actuary is, I made some new friends, went to a job fair, learned how to make a resume, and I'm learning how to interview.
  • I've taken three of the hardest class I've ever had and used bits and pieces of a lot of my mathematical background.  Even the things I didn't think I would ever use.
  • I learned what it means to study.  Like actually study.
  • I'm learning how to live on my own and do big kid things.  Like cook and pay bills and budget.
  • Kimmy and I got engaged!
  • I taught a freshman level math class this past fall.  It was fun, but I am very glad that I decided not to teach for the rest of my life.  It just isn't for me.
  • I learned many more lessons of frustration, disappointment, sadness, and confusion.
  • Overall the fall semester was a success.  I think that many of you have read about it as I have blogged.
  • There have been many many more things, but I don't have the time to discuss them all.  I hope that everyone else has also had an exciting year.  I'd love to hear about your year in the comments.  Even if you're one of those people that never comments or "likes," you should say something about your year, be it good or bad.

When I got home I very promptly took a shower.  I didn't smell very good and I felt disgusting.  After my shower I did some studying, napped, and then more studying.  Then Kimmy got here for dinner!  And after dinner we all just hung out for a while.  Eventually Kimmy and I went to Becky's to celebrate Marci's birthday!  We had cake and played Dominion.  And then we came home because Kimmy and I were tired.  The end!

1.01.2012

Day 222

Well, happy new years, everyone.

Today was pretty good.  Apparently my body decided to wake up around 5am and just stay awake.  So that was pretty neat.  I wasn't feeling especially fantastic, but I couldn't sleep. I got up, ate some breakfast, took a shower, then went to lay down for a little bit.  Miles was coming over around 9:30, so I had to be ready.  He and I came down to Cincinnati for new year's at AJ's apartment.  So Miles and I left around 9:30, stopped at Wal-mart to get snacks, and then headed off to Cincinnati.

The trip was long.  It was a good trip, but very long.  We got here a little bit before Mark and John, so we went to the store to get Hawaiian rolls.  By the time we got back, Mark and John were almost there.  When they arrived, we played some games.  Then we went to Skyline for dinner.  I wasn't really impressed.  Oh well.

Umm... then we played video games for a while.  Like, the rest of the night.  I've come to realize that new years has lost a lot of significance.  Around 12:15 someone looked at their phone and said "oh... I guess it's the new year."  And that was it.  But I didn't mind too much.

Sorry for the short post, but I'm pretty tired, so I might try to sleep or something.  Night

12.31.2011

Day 221

Well, the new year is nearly upon us.  And I have been talking about this year for 221 days.  Huh.  What a thought.

Today was good, I think.  It was pretty standard.  I woke up, had breakfast, played words with friends, took a shower.  Then I cleaned my room a little bit.  It's hard to keep everything nice when I know I'm only going to be here for a few weeks.  But I kind of manage.  Ish.

After lunch I did some exercise problems.  I did another partial-practice exam, or as they call it a mid-term.  I did better this time.  7 out of 11 questions.  One of the questions was really just poorly worded and I had no idea what it was asking.  Another I didn't know what I was doing, but I made a good attempt.  I ended up being really close to correct, but forgot one tiny step.  The last one... I just made one assumption that I know was incorrect.  But I was on a roll and just did it without thinking.  7/11 would have been barely passing.  Probably a 6 (the lowest passing grade).  They say to study for a 10 to get a 7. So that is my goal.  Study for a 10.  No how to do every problem in the book and on the website.  I'm not 2/3 of the way through the study material, so I think I should be able to finish in the next week or so.  Then I can just work through problems.

Um... I took a short nap.  When I woke up I had dinner with parents.  Mom made pizza for dinner.  It was tasty.  We also watched a movie called Unstoppable about a runaway train.  It was good.  It was a bit intense for mom, but it was pretty good.  Then... we all went about our various activities.  Around I went over to Becky's and hung out with her and Miles.  And now I'm going to bed!  Night!

12.30.2011

Day 220

I didn't get back especially late last night.  I was just really tired.

Most of yesterday was pretty standard.  I woke up, got breakfast, showered, then started studying.  Then I got lunch and studied some more.  I actually got pretty far in studying yesterday.  I finished the practice problems in one chapter and almost got all the way through two more chapters.  It felt good.

Around 3 I left to go to the Kia dealership.  My car has been having this problem where the gas pedal sticks.  It's usually not terrible, I just have to give it a little extra love the first time that I push on it.  But especially when it's cold it can get a bit tricky.  I went to the Kia dealership over the summer to get it fixed, and it worked for about a week.  So they ordered a part for me and the lady said that it should be here early Wednesday morning.  I have a dentists appointment at 10, so I have to go in really early.  Yay.

I took a nap when I got home.  It was awesome.

We had pork chops for dinner.  They were good.  Then around 8 or so I went over to Becky's.  When I got there she and Marci were hungry, so we went to Logan's to get food.  I had a cup of their seafood chowder and it was really good.  Then we went back to Becky's and played Dominion.  I almost won.  I was two points away....blech.  But it was lots of fun.  And then I came home!  The end.

12.29.2011

Day 219

Ho hum.  Today today.  It was not an exceptionally eventful day, but a good one.  After I got up (around 9) I just putzed around for about an hour or so, eating breakfast, showering, and playing words with friends.  Mom and dad left around 10:30 to go put shelves in at mama and poppy's.  I just stayed at home until about 11:30, when I left to go have lunch over there.

For lunch we had lasagna and a beadstick.  And canole for dessert.  It was very good.  I haven't been especially hungry recently and I don't really know why.  But oh well.  After lunch we went up to their apartment.  Poppy was at dialysis at the time, so we didn't get to see him.  But I helped mama use poppy's Amazon gift card (I'm sure they'll share!).  Then I went off to JCPenney to see if I could exchange my suit jacket.  I got a 38L but didn't have a long sleeve shirt with me at the time.  I should have gotten a 40R.  The jacket is supposed to expose about half an inch to a quarter of an inch of shirt sleeve.  Mine did not.  But they wouldn't exchange it for me because I had worn it.  So mama said that she has a friend who will fix it for me.  Yay!

Upon returning home I did some studying.  I finished the questions from yesterday and started on the next section.  It seemed pretty easy, so I just did the whole section today.  I did pretty well on the exercises, so I was happy.  They just always seem to start with a couple problems that are total odd-balls. Oh well.  I'll get it.

For dinner we had sloppy joes.  We all think that Amber is nonsense for liking Manwich better than homemade sloppy joes.  But oh well.  Dinner was had.  After dinner we played a game of settlers.  Actually, we played the Caravan expansion.  Dad was less than amused.  His numbers did not get rolled very much.  Like... hardly at all.  And mine got rolled constantly.  So yeah.  I would have been frustrated had I been in his position.  In fact I've been in his position before.  And I was quite unhappy.

After Catan we all went off to do our own thing.  Dad has been rearranging the computer room.  I'll take some pictures if I think of it.  But in the mean time, I'm going to bed.  Night!
